Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
We’re doing the Harry Potter book release event for book 7 at “Bound to Read” in East Atlanta Village. It’s an exciting venue - it’s the last one as far as we know. We should have hit this market sooner - it’s a blast! The first one for us was in Gainesville at Chapter 13 Books. I think they actually filed chapter 13. “Bound to Read” is a cool little place right on the main drag in EAV. We’re getting quite the crowd of locals here, mostly in costume. The wife has put together a nice display including such props as the Sorting Hat, arcane books, and a large cow’s skull. There’s an interesting story around that last item, but it’s for another time.
Of all the dorks we’ve been associated or formed numbers with, Wizard dorks are some of the more tame. They’re about having fun, dressing up in wizardry garb, and reading books. Nothing too serious. I think a lot of them aren’t even really Harry Potter fans, they’re just interested in going to book parties and having a good time.
The only real problem with the deal was that they sold out of books from pre-orders and we didn’t get a chance to get a copy. That, and it’s like a million miles from Gainesville to East Atlanta Village. But this is good business for Celestial Studios.
*UPDATE Whoa! Just as I wrote that last piece, they wound up with three copies to spare. Sweet!

Horray for Harry! I did enjoy the evening, but yeah, it was a heck of a drive! I am now feeling sad that it is the last book. I saw the new movie last night and am trying to savor the book but I just know when it is all said and done there will be a big hole in my heart where Harry used to be.

[...] On Friday night, we took a trek to East Atlanta (a very fashionable little area) to Bound to be Read Books for the drop of the final installment of the Harry Potter Series. Fox and Olaf were taking pictures of the Harry Potter fans anxiously awaiting the book release (I helped a little- putting stickers on discs and trying to get folks to step right up and say cheese.) Fox is a master at setting up amazing backdrops. Her photography skills are truly fantastic and the fanatics seemed to enjoy it too. (My favorite group came as a Quidditch team- using what were basics from around the house- some maroon graduation robes, little nerf baseball bats and household brooms to complete the look, but as a group they were hysterical!) Who decides which books get press (Harry Potter) and which get censored? After all, censorship is becoming America’s favorite past-time. The US gov’t (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like “America Deceived” from Amazon and Wikipedia, shut down Imus and fire 21-year tenured, BYU physics professor Steven Jones because he proved explosives, thermite in particular, took down the WTC buildings. Free Speech forever (especially for books).
